The background

Ascend Building Solutions is a multi-trade contractor run by Ashley Jarrett, based in Pontefract and working across Wakefield, Castleford, Leeds and the wider Yorkshire area. Fifteen years on the tools, five industry accreditations, and a workforce that is one hundred per cent DBS checked.

What makes the business unusual is its range. On one side, domestic work: extensions, loft conversions, kitchens and bespoke joinery. On the other, something quite different: FireQual certified fire door installation, washroom and cubicle refurbishment, suspended ceilings and partitioning, emergency glazing, and planned maintenance for schools, academies, care homes and commercial sites.

Most contractors pick a lane. Ascend runs both properly, and the website had to make that look like strength rather than confusion.

The challenge

This was fundamentally a problem of two audiences with nothing in common.

A homeowner planning a loft conversion wants reassurance. Will the site be tidy? Will it run to time? Will I be chasing five different trades? They are spending their own money on their own home and the decision is emotional as much as practical.

A facilities manager or business manager at a multi-academy trust wants something else entirely. They want certification, compliance records, DBS clearance, response times and evidence that you can work in an occupied building without closing it. The decision is procedural, and the wrong answer creates personal risk for them.

Write for the homeowner and the schools work looks amateur. Write for the compliance buyer and the domestic side reads cold and corporate. The site needed both, held together without feeling like two websites bolted together.

A hero that splits the audience immediately

The homepage opens with a four-slide hero, and each slide is aimed at a different buyer.

The first establishes the whole proposition in three words: We build. We maintain. We certify. The second goes straight at the compliance audience with Fire doors. Done right. Signed off. The third speaks to homeowners: Extensions. Lofts. Kitchens. The fourth launches the new maintenance contracts: Planned. Reactive. Covered.

Each slide carries its own pair of calls to action, so a visitor can leave the carousel on the right track within seconds. Nobody has to scroll through work that is irrelevant to them to find the bit that is not.

Treating the credentials as the product

In fire door work, the certification is not a trust badge. It is the actual thing being sold. A fire door with the wrong tolerances or missing intumescent strips fails, and the client's compliance fails with it.

So rather than dropping accreditation logos into the footer, we built a dedicated section titled Safe to let on site, which explains in plain terms what each credential means and why a buyer should care: CHAS approval as the first thing a facilities manager asks for, FireQual as third-party certification rather than time served, full DBS clearance for schools and care settings, SMSTS for larger projects, and asbestos awareness for older school stock.

The accreditations also run as a continuous ticker beneath the hero, so they register before a visitor has read a word of body copy. For the compliance audience that is the single most important information on the site.

Productising maintenance

The most commercially interesting part of this build was the maintenance offer. Ascend was already doing reactive repair work for schools and commercial sites, but on an ad hoc basis: a call, a visit, an invoice.

We worked that into three defined packages, Bronze, Silver and Gold, presented as a proper comparison with visit frequency, inclusions, response times and a stated best-fit client for each. Bronze for smaller schools and nurseries, Silver for primary and secondary sites, Gold for multi-academy trusts and care groups, with QR-coded asset tracking and budget forecasting at the top tier.

That turns an unpredictable stream of call-outs into recurring contract revenue, and it gives a business manager something they can actually take to a budget holder. A line at the end offers a free site assessment for anyone unsure which tier fits, which removes the need to self-diagnose before enquiring.

An enquiry form that qualifies the lead

The contact form asks two questions that most trade websites miss: what do you need, and what type of property is it.

The job dropdown lists all nine services. The property dropdown separates domestic, school or academy, care home, office or commercial, and hospitality. Between them, Ashley knows before he picks up the phone whether he is looking at a single emergency glazing job or a maintenance contract across a multi-building school site, and can respond accordingly.

It is a small piece of design that saves a great deal of time, and it is the difference between a contact form and a sales tool.

Copy, speed and search

The copy was written to sound like the business rather than like a brochure. Lines like "so you're not chasing five trades and three excuses" and "stop firefighting, start preventing" do more work than a paragraph of polished marketing language, because the audience recognises the voice.

The site is built as a fast, lightweight static build with no plugin overhead, which keeps it quick on a phone signal from a building site and leaves very little surface for anything to go wrong. Nine individual service pages give each offer its own ranking opportunity, with the SEO targeting commercially valuable local searches across builders in Wakefield, fire door installation, loft conversions and school maintenance, and photography captioned for the locations the business actually covers.

The outcome

Ascend now has a site that works equally hard for a homeowner in Pontefract and a business manager at an academy trust. The credentials that win compliance work are impossible to miss, the new maintenance packages have a proper shopfront, and every enquiry arrives pre-qualified.

Had my new webpage designed by Craig from start to finish he was great to deal with. Would highly recommend.
